Minister inaugurates Bauchi's Mineral, Environmental Committee

THE Minister of mines and Steel, Mr Musa Sada, has inaugurated the Bauchi State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO).In a speech at the occasion, Sada said that the establishment of the committee derived from theeffort by the Federal Government to place the mining sector in a proper perspective in the state.He emphasised that the gesture was aimed at fast-tracking the orderly and sustainable development of the nation's mineral resources in line with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act (NMMA) 2007.He, therefore, urged the 8-man committee to see the constitutionof the committee as apractical demonstration of Federal Government resolve to partner withhost mining communities.He said thatthe communities would benefit both socially and economically from the mining activities.The minister noted that though mining and mineral resources was on the Exclusive Legislative List of the constitution, the involvement of stateswas a clear testimony of the Federal Government's interdependence with the othertiers of government.He, therefore, urged the committee to adhere to their terms of referenceto enablethe three tiers of government as well as individual miners and companies using the raw materials to benefit.Earlier, the State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Sangir Saleh, listed the minerals found in the state to include tin, galena, kaolin, coal, limestone, iron ore, ceramic clay, gemstones and granite.
