Olushola idolises Obi, eyes European move

Published by Guardian on Mon, 16 Apr 2012

FOR three seasons, Oladejo Olushola plied his trade with a second division football club in Ghana and during his stint with the Accra-based Rot-Weiss Professionals, he helped the team gain promotion to the top tier of the Ghanaian national league. The 21-year old midfielder is now shaping up with a Lagos-based amateur side, Goodnews FC, after returning from a one-year knee injury that sidelined him for most part of last season with the aim of inking a deal with a European club next football season.'Playing in Ghana has helped me to improve my game,' he said. 'Throughout my stay with Rot-Weiss, I featured in most of their matches. I joined the team when they were playing in the second division but we were able to get promotion to the first division like the National League in Nigeria last season.'But after playing few matches, I copped a knee injury, which prevented me from featuring for the team last season. I am now on my feet and I am hoping to get a club in Europe.'For Olushola, John Mikel Obi remains his role model, having been following the career of the Super Eagles player since 2003, when Mikel represented Nigeria at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Finland. He added: 'Mikel is a player I will always admire for his style of play and for me he is the best player I will always want to be like in future.'His accurate passes and his mastery of matches have made him a player Chelsea relies on in most of their matches. I will want to play for my country and I am ready to wait for my time because with what coach Stephen Keshi is doing at present, players like me will one day have the opportunity to represent my country.'Meanwhile, Olushola is urging the Nigeria Premier League to take a cue from Ghana, where football is taken as serious business with private people being encouraged to own teams.'I think it is when we see sports as serious business that our league will begin to take shape for the better. In Ghana, football clubs are mostly owned and run by private individuals who have the passion for the game,' the Oyo State-born player said.
