Cross River imports high-tech facilities for grassroots sports development

THE Cross River State Government has ordered high-tech sports equipment worth millions of naira for the development of grassroots sports, Sports Commissioner, Patrick Ugbe, has revealed.The equipments have already arrived in Nigeria and are being expected in Calabar, Ugbe, who assumed duty two weeks ago, told reporters at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, after inspecting the facilities under his ministry.He said the equipment was ordered to enhance Cross River State's Comprehensive Sports Development Programme aimed at boosting sports in the state. Ugbe said: 'I embarked on facilities inspection to assess our readiness for upcoming sporting activities.'We will host the All Nigeria Athletics Meet sponsored by the state government in June. It is very important because this in an Olympics year and it will also be used as trials to select our athletes for the Games. We will also host the National Sports Festival in 2014.'We need to begin to prepare. I am here to take an inventory and see how we are going to fortify and provide necessary equipment to host successful sporting events.'He added: 'The sports equipment we ordered under the Comprehensive Sports Development Programme has arrived in three containers. They are all branded for the programme and will be distributed across the state. We will also ensure adequate security for the equipment.
