World Cup Qualifier: NFF shops for another venue

Published by Tribune on Tue, 17 Apr 2012

INDICATIONS are rife that the proposed World Cup and Nation's Cup qualifier match between Namibia and Rwanda may be moved from Ahmadu Bello Stadium to a yet to be named stadium by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).The idea to have the matches played at the Kaduna stadium by the NFF have received knocks from Nigerians following the recent attack on the city by the dreaded Boko Haram sect.Investigation by Tribunesports revealed that the NFF board has not met officially to discuss the issue of another venue for the matches but it is obvious that they are shopping for another venue to host the match. The source disclosed that the NFF has not even taken any dicision about Ahmadu Bello stadium as the authentic venue for the match, saying that 'some members of the board are merely flying the kite about Kaduna because we have not taken any decision on the venue after the public out cry on the Boko Haram,' he said. The source further said, 'the issue of Ahmadu Bello stadium came up merely for the board to say thank you to the Kaduna state government for hostings the NFF annual general meeting but now that the security in Kaduna is alarming, we are seriously shopping for a new venue and do not forget the fact that National Stadium, Abuja is not in good shape and as well NFF board is not willing to waste the lives of Nigerians because nobody can trust the Boko Harma people,' said the source. The source who pleaded not to be mentioned said; the issue of Boko Haram is a source of worry to all of us on the board due to the insecurity at Kaduna which was not conducive, but now that the state is under attack by Boko Haram, we have to take a bold step because we are not ready to endanger the lives of our people and we have to look for other Venues with natural grass in the country for the forthcoming matches,' he added.
