This viral gif of a rogue golf cart actually had some serious consequences

Published by Business Insider on Tue, 06 Oct 2015

Thisgif that shows a bunch of men boarding and disembarking a golf cart as it flies acrossa football field is making the roundson Twitter and people are riveted. As it turns out, the gif comes from a video that first went viral in December 2011.Whilemany are pointing to the gif's humor, the truth is it actually resulted in a lawsuit and some injury. But first, here's what it looks like.It starts with arogue, driver-less golf cart plowing into a crowd of men, and ends with one manstepping in to stop the cart. Take a look:This gif has so many characters and subplots, it's like a Shakespearean tragedy pic.twitter.com/rUYl1SOGIc' Senongo (@senongo) October 2, 2015It's a lot, right' As the Twitter user who posted it, @Senongo, says, it has "so many characters and subplots, it's like a Shakespearean tragedy."Let's break it down. The gifbegins with the golf cart entering the scene. The cart crashes into a crowd of men. Most of them fall off the cart quickly, but one is left behind. He steers for a few seconds, then barrel-rolls off the side of the cart as someone else jumps in.At the same time, another mansteps in and stops the cart. The story doesn't end with the gif.The Daily Mail has all the details, but as it turns out, the man in the light blue shirt actually might have kept the cart from striking other people. The incident took place at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas, they report, and the guy in the light blue shirt was a high school football coach named Willie Amendola. Amendola ended up trying to sue the Cowboys for $1 million for embarrassment and mental anguish after the full video of the incident went viral in 2011, according to the Mail. It's not clear whether he was successful in court, but the lawsuit claims Amendola wasn't just sitting idly by in the passenger seat throughout the ordeal. Instead, he "heroically had the presence of mind to direct the cart, which he briefly controlled, in such a manner that it avoided striking the head or bodies of numerous others who had fallen," the suit claimed. Also, Amendola claimed he was injured by the incident, as didanother man named Undre Smith, according to ESPN.And now, the tweeted gif alone has 45,000 retweets since being posted on Oct. 2, while one version of the video has over 1 million views on YouTube, with hundreds of thousands more on other identicalvideos.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: We put cheap beer to a blind taste test and were surprised by the results
