Niger: ANPP crisis continues as court clears David Umoru for gov poll

Published by Tribune on Mon, 18 Apr 2011

Despite last weekends ruling of theFederal High Courtin Minnaclearing Mr David Umoru as the gubernatorial candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) for the April 26 election in Niger State, the crisis in the party is yet to abate. This is because the challenger for the ticket, Honourable Bala Adamu Kuta, hasvowed to challenge the court decision in Appeal.Justice Sabiu Yahuza had, on Friday, cleared Umoru as the ANPPs duly elected candidate and turned down the prayers of Honourable Kuta, who challenged the candidacy of Umoru for lack of merit.Kuta had approached the court to upturn the candidacy of Umoru shortly after the INEC cleared him as the partys standard-bearer.The crisis in the ANPP came to the peak during the party primaries, when two ANPP leaders emergedthe partys standard-bearer at two different primaries. Umoru was first to emerge at a congress held at Gidan Matasa, while Kuta was declared the winner at a congress that took place at the Abdulsalami Abubakar Youth Centre, Minna.Expressing his displeasure with the court verdict, Kuta told our correspondent in Minna, at the weekend, that he would appeal against the judgment, stating that the court failed to consider all the facts his counsel placed before it, in making its decision.I am not satisfied with the outcome of the case. I am going to seek justice in a superior court. We are surely going to appeal the court verdict, Kuta maintained.
