NIMC, JTB sign pact on national database system

Published by Guardian on Mon, 18 Apr 2011

THE National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Joint Tax Board (JTB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a National Database system that would strengthen biometric linkages among all governmental agencies across the country. The technology would among others fast track the sharing of information among government agencies, for them to optimise government resources and to use the resources for the provision of amenities.Speaking at the Execution of License Agreement between the NIMC and JTB, recently in Abuja, the Director General NIMC, Mr. Chris Onyemenam noted that the execution of the MoU would facilitate the location of the data centre within the premises of NIMC.Disclosing that the biometric connection was already in place in 14 governmental agencies among which is the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the NIMC boss noted that the establishment of a National Database centre was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan directive in streamlining biometric link project in government agencies. The chairman of the JTB who also doubles as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mrs. Ifueko Okauru noted that the establishment of the database system would ensure a total compliance with payment of tax by government agencies.Okauru said, for the past 6/7 years we have been trying as a body to improve the level of compliance of tax payers in the payment of taxes all towards improving the development of this country. We have said it time and time again that we cannot do it alone.Revenue generation, every body is responsible for it, the ability to know whether we are all voluntarily compliance or not is driven by the quality of information that we have, the quality of information we have should be driven by the input from every one, she addedThe FIRS boss however noted that the National Data Base would be linked to other bodies: FRSC, Health, Banking etc to ensure that we have right information to drag tax compliance to Nigeria.
