World Cup qualifier: Jumare backs Awolowo Stadium

Published by Tribune on Wed, 18 Apr 2012

AS the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) commences move to shop for another venue for the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifier matches in June, the former Stadium Manager, National Stadium Lagos and Special Project Officer, National Stadium, Abuja, Ahmed Jumare has thrown his weight behind the call for the use of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium for the matches. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had muted the idea of using the Ahmadu Bello Stadium for the two matches but due to the outcry by Nigerians that the proposed venue is not save for such an important match because of insecurity, the federation is now looking elsewhere for an alternate venue.Jumare, who resumed as the Stadium Manager, Obafemi Awolowo Stadium last week in a chat with Tribunesports said that the stadium is good enough to host the all important match, going by the facilities on ground.According to Jumare who promised to make a positive change at his new post said that Obafemi Awolowo stadium had good history of followership when it comes to football, saying that, "with the love the people have for football and the fact that they have not seen the national team for a very long time, it would be a great opportunity for the people of South West to watch the national team live and I am optimistic that the federation would not regret the action", he said.Speaking further, Jumare said, "aside the above, the stadium has one of the best pitches in the country and it is also a natural grass unlike claims in some quarters that it is only Abuja National Stadium and Ahmadu Bello Stadium that have natural grass, and this, the players would love to play on.'Also, the security around the venue is guaranteed going by my findings at the Awolowo stadium,' he said.
