First Deepwater guns for third straight victory

Published by Guardian on Wed, 18 Apr 2012

FIRST Deepwater Basketball Club will continue its quest to defend the Zenith Bank Women Basketball League title it won last year when the league resumes in Ilorin tomorrow. The second phase of the competition dunks off tomorrow with First Deepwater, leader of the competition after the first phase held in Kaduna, gunning for its third straight title and a place in the August/September FIBA Africa Zone Three elimination competition slated for Liberia. The team arrived in Ilorin on Monday and has since began preparations in readiness for the battles in which it has former champion, First Bank, as its biggest challenger. The coach Lateef Erinfolami-tutored side won all six games played during the first phase with an 88 to 81 points win over First Bank in Kaduna.Confident coach Erinfolami said before the team departed Lagos on Monday that his girls would continue from where they stopped in Kaduna, where they beat Sunshine Angels of Akure 81-64 on the last day.Meanwhile, club chairman, Babatunde Babalola, has urged the players and their handlers to earn the title at the close of the second phase so as to make the third phase in Lagos a mere formality. The league's reigning most valuable player, Nkechi Akashili, said the players were rearing to go.The Delta Force Basketball Club of Asaba former left-handed combo guard believes that First Deepwater Basketball Club has completed the 'order of change' in Nigerian women basketball scene, compared with what obtains in the past where First Bank Basketball Club dominated for close to a decade with little or no opposition.
