Zamfara to renovate oldest primary school

ZAMFARA state government has awarded a contract for the total renovation of the 83-year-old Gusau Township Primary School at the cost of N73million.The primary school, which had produced prominent personalities including the former National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Muhammad Gusau, former minister of Agriculture during second Republic, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau and many commissioners, permanent secretaries in the state, has a present capacity of 2389 pupils.Speaking to The Guardian the headmaster of the school, Malam Bashir Jibril Makama, decried the congestion of pupils in the school, pointing out that, a classroom in the school has a population of 300 pupils and above.According to him, his seven years leadership of the school was very alarming in view of the poor infrastructures in the school, saying that, over 90 per cent of pupils were seating on the floor as there were no chairs and tables for them to seat in the classrooms.He said under the new contract, the school would also benefit with 16 additional classrooms in order to decongest the pupils' population per class, adding that, for the past 60 years the school has not been able to get such structural development.Also speaking to The Guardian, the contractor handling the school's project, Alhaji Rufa'I Hassan Gusau, expressed readiness to complete the project within the stipulated period.He said the project was part of the schools projects development scheme introduced by the present government in order to provide conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning in public schools of the state.Alhaji Hassan Gusau whoo said the school was established in 1929, promised to carry out a quality project in the school.
