Govt to infuse ICT into education curriculum

THE Federal Government has declared its commitment to infuse Information and Communication Technology, ICT, into the educational curriculum of primary and secondary schools in order to empower the next generation for national development.Declaring open the National ICT Week on Monday at the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters, Abuja, Minister of State for Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike said that ICT has become the basic driver for sustainable national development globally, which the Federal Ministry of Education has given priority in its programmes.Wike noted that ICT is a critical factor of competitiveness and survival of the individual in the contemporary world, pointing out that pupils and students are being groomed to take advantage of this phenomenon.According to him, 'the Federal Government recognises this fact and has given priority attention to ICT development in the country.'In the last few years, the Federal Government has not only created the enabling environment for the private sector, but has also invested tremendously in expanding broadband penetration to facilitate cost-effective access to the Internet and its services nationwide to support and advance socio-economic empowerment and development.'He noted that the week-long training programme will afford pupils and students the opportunity to be trained in various aspects of ICT in preparation for the national ICT competition.The minister said, 'I also believe that the programme would at the end, empower the youths to adapt to the rapidly changing global environment where effective ICT knowledge and skills have become essential for enhancing personal development and life's success.'The National ICT Week attracted teachers, students and pupils from 74 schools across the nation.
