Tension in Bayelsa as S/Court decides Dickson's fate today

Published by Tribune on Fri, 20 Apr 2012

As Supreme Court set to deliver judgment today in the lingering suit between former Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the authentic candidate in the February 11 gubernatorial poll, won by Governor Henry Dick-son, uncertainty and tension have enveloped the state.Nigerian Tribune investigation revealed that both the camp of Sylva and Governor Dickson were unsettled over what may be content of today's judgment, which would finally resolve the controversies arising from the exclusion of the former governor from the gubernatorial primary won by Dickson in November 19, 2011.It was authoritatively gathered that development had created atmosphere of uncertainty and tension in Yenagoa, the state capital, as residents clustered in groups weighing what would be the variables of the apex court ruling.Credible source informed the Nigerian Tribune that Dickson, perceived to be backed by President Goodluck Jona-than and Sylva were already strategising on how to deal with outcome of the judgment, by holding discreet meetings and consultations with their loyalists and supporters, both in the state and Abuja. But, the political camp of the incumbent governor had insisted that Dickson was not desperate or nursing any fear about the outcome of the suit. Also, the governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Chief Press Agbedi, at a press conference in Yenagoa, on Tuesday, asserted that 'he is not desperate or keen about the forthcoming ruling of the apex court. He has no pressing challenge before the Supreme Court.'Commenting on what would be the outcome of today's ruling, the media aide to the former governor, Mr Doifie Ola, in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Yenagoa, said 'we expect the court to do justice. That is all we ask for.
