EU, NDI, Mark, Wabara, PDP condemn violence

Published by Tribune on Tue, 19 Apr 2011

COMMONWEALTH and European Union (EU) observers, as well as the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI), on Monday, condemned the rising post-electoral violence in some parts of the country. They spoke in separate press conferences, where they equally presented their reports on the presidential election to journalists. While both the NDI and the IRI noted that they were troubled by reports of the violence, the EU posited that what was needed was a peaceful atmosphere and encouraged stakeholders to use only legal and judicial means to express their opinion, in case they think the election did not go in a fair way. Also, the Senate President, Senator David Mark, alarmed by the eruption of violence in some parts of the country, after the presidential election, has charged all security formations to mobilise for action and halt it immediately. He condemned the violence being perpetrated in some parts of the country and implored the security operatives not to treat the sponsors and perpetrators with kid gloves. Also condemning the spate of violence that broke out in the northern states, on Monday, former Senate President, Adolphus Wa-bara, has called on respected northern leaders to call their youths to order.Wabara, who said the situation in some parts of the North, as being reported, had gone beyond political party lines, said Nigeria could not afford to witness the annulment of another free and fair election. He advised the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major-General Muha-mmadu Buhari (retd), to demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship by congratulating President Goodluck Jonathan on his victory at the election. Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the violence, saying that the attacks by hoodlums and thugs in some parts of the North were a kind of booby traps set by the opposition to truncate the ongoing democracy in the country.
