Jonathans victory, a call to duty - Mimiko It has affirmed Nigerias unity - Oni

Published by Tribune on Tue, 19 Apr 2011

The Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan over his victory in Saturdays presidential election, saying that his election by Nigerians in the poll was a call to duty.Governor Mimiko, who became the governor of the state on the ticket of the Labour Party (LP), had directed the people of the state to cast their votes for President Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following Jonathans adoption by the LP leadership.Indeed, the governor equally led the people of the state to vote for the president on Saturday, saying that the people of the state and Nigerians at large stood a better chance of gaining more from the Presidency of Goodluck Jonathan given his experience first as a deputy governor, governor, vice-president and then president and for rising above his party to become a true statesman by allowing the conduct of a truly free and fair election during the National Assembly election.A press statement signed by Mr Kolawole Olabisi, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Mimiko, quoted the governor as saying: My President Sir, I want to, on behalf of the good people of Ondo State, congratulate you on this well deserved victory and the outpour of love and goodwill from fellow Nigerians who discountenanced religious, ethnicity and other base sentiments to vote overwhelmingly for you.Your election Sir is a call to duty and Nigerians have spoken and gave you their implicit support believing that you are capable of taking us to greater heights as a nation. The problems of the nation are enormous, no doubt but they are surmountable and with our support and your able leadership, we shall all smile at the end of the day.I want to commend the entire people of the nation for this feat, for rising above ethnic sentiments and bigotry to prove our detractors, who felt we could not get it right as a people during this ongoing election, wrong. Today, democracy, based on the sanctity of one man, one vote, reigns supreme in Nigeria. The people spoke and emphatically too that never again would imposition of candidates against their choice be the order of the day. They voted against democracy at gunpoint and we are all happy. This is a new Nigeria and Mr. President Sir, accepts the assurances of our support andAlso, the former governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni, has described the victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in Saturdays presidential election as an affirmation of Nigerias unity, saying, Now, no one would seek to rule Nigeria from the North and South dichotomys perspective, but in terms of what he or she has to offer the country. The former governor, who reacted to President Jonathans imminent victory through his media aide, Wale Ojo-Lanre, also thanked residents of Ekiti State, especially supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for contributing to the presidents resounding electoral victory. He said: With the overwhelming votes secured by President Jonathan across the country, it is now clear that Nigeria has developed beyond ethnic sentiments and this is a further affirmation of the countrys unity and indivisibility.I still remember what one of the presidential candidates said last year November. But today, the man who was described as not electable because a section of the country wont vote for him even if he were to be the best man for the job has been voted overwhelmingly by Nigerians.
