Ebira people seek unity among Nigerians

THE Ebira speaking people of Nigeria have resolved to continue to fight for the oneness of Nigeria as a country.Rising from their first Ohiku Ebira Day celebration in Okene, Kogi State, the National President of the Ebira Ohiku Descendant Union, Isah Ahmed Bukar, called on those calling for the breakup of Nigeria to desist.He said the Ebira people would do all in their power to keep Nigeria one, saying that General Yakubu Gowon's mantra of "to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done,' was still relevant.Bukar added that the sacrifice of past leaders to ensure a united and strong Nigeria, was a covenant that all Nigerians must keep with the larger and innocent Nigerian people who just want to be allowed to be."We, therefore, tell all those that talk loosely or even seriously about the breakup of Nigeria to realize that the Nigeria project has one of the greatest futures of all African countries," he said.He noted that the bringing together of all the Ebira speaking people was to build a bridge of unity and trust among the people with the same cultural heritage and linguistic affinity.He called on the people to be more united in order to forge a common front in their various agitation for better and friendly environment for all.Speaking also, the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Alhaji Ado Ibrahim, called on the people to be more committed in the their quest for the creation of Confluence State which would be made up of purely the Ebira speaking people.He commended the organisers of the ceremony which attracted all sons and daughters of Ebira and and advised them to make it a yearly affair to ensure its continuity.The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, while paying glowing tributes to the foundling fathers of the Ebira Ohiku Descendants Union, stressed the need for the organisation to be focused and decisive in decision making and policy implementation.He said the efforts of those who muted the idea of the coming together of the Ebira people would be in vain if the present generation failed to actualise the fundamental objectives of the Union. The Ebira speaking people of Nigeria who were originally from the Kwararafa Empire, consists of the people known today as Ebira people of Kogi Central; the Egbura of Kotonkarfi and Mozum, also of Kogi State; the Egbura Toto and Umaisha (Opanda), all in Nassarawa State, the Egbura of Abaji in the FCT and the Etuno of Igarra in Akoko-Edo area in Edo State.
