Published by Tribune on Thu, 26 Apr 2012

MORE than 15 robbers, on Wednesday, invaded one of the first generation banks at Ankpa, Kogi State, killing seven persons. The robbers also sacked a police station in the area with gunshots.Among those killed in the incident were a native doctor and a woman-trader, who sells her wares by the roadside.Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered that the robbers stormed the town with five Jeeps, fully armed with sophisticated guns.Sources disclosed further that after the invasion of the bank by the robbers, they headed to another bank, but could not enter, after which they attacked a nearby police station, where they carted away guns and ammunition, while they also set some detained suspected criminals free from police custody. It was also gathered that the police officers on duty took to their heels during the invasion which lasted for 25 minutes. After the attack on the police station, the robbers headed back to the second bank, shot sporadically to scare customers and security agents away, but the joint security forces, which included the military, State Security Service (SSS) and the police were able to repel them. Those that were injured in the incident were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the incident, adding that the command was waiting for the report of the divisional police officer of the sacked station.
