Lagos: Mangoro, Cement residents demand for pedestrian bridges

Published by Tribune on Thu, 26 Apr 2012

As a result of the inherent danger that people, especially children face when crossing the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway at Mangoro and Cement Bus Stop, in Lagos, residents have called on the government to provide pedestrian bridges in these two areas.According to the residents, the provision of a pedestrian bridges in these areas will make life easier for the residents as it will stop unnecessary loss of lives caused by people regularly crossing the expressway amidst racing vehicles. The residents promised that unlike in some areas where the pedestrian bridges available were not used, they would make maximum use of the bridge and also care for it if provided.Speaking on behalf of the residents, Mr Dapo Sowunmi, stated that they had continually been making the request and all they have been getting were promises that have refused to materialise."We have been asking for pedestrian bridge for long and all we hear is that the plan is already in the pipeline and government will soon do it."Late last year, there was a rumour that they wanted to start construction of one at Mangoro Bus Stop, but till now, nothing has been done. Residents here, especially children, are endangered species because we cross the express regularly and it's not an easy thing," he concluded.According to the residents, provision of the pedestrian bridge needed to be treated as a matter of urgency as it will make life easier for them and also preserve lives and property.
