Residents seek expansion of Akobo road

Residents of Akobo/Oju-Irin in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State have called on the state government to, as a matter of urgency, carry out an expansion of the main road in the area to ensure a free flow of vehicular movement.Investigations by the Community News revealed that the gridlock on the two-lane road was a usual occurrence, thus making any journey through it a nightmare.Speaking on the issue, a resident of Oju-Irin area who gave his name as Adewale, lamented the hardship he usually encountered while going or returning from work everyday.'My brother, the traffic situation here is quite disturbing. I think it is a replica of what happens in Lagos. Actually, what we are experiencing now started not quite long due to what I think is population explosion in this community', he said.'I have to come out as early as 6:00 a.m. in order to beat the traffic because from 7:00 a.m., the queue will be from Oju-Irin here to General Gas and only God knows when it will be cleared.'Adewale further noted that people were moving down to the area on a daily basis and this has led to the overstretching of the existing facilities in the area.Corroborating this view, a commercial bus driver who plied the route, described the situation as very ugly, particularly for commercial motorists.The bus driver who refused to disclose his name while narrating his experience, stated that a journey from General Gas to Akobo which ordinarily should take about three minutes sometimes took him more than 30 minutes, owing to traffic bottlenecks.'Oyo State government really needs to do something about this road. It is becoming too small for the volume of traffic here,' he said.Speaking on the issue, a landlord in the area, Deacon Abraham, called on the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to as a matter of urgency, do something about the road.According to him,"the road urgently needs an expansion to cater for the increasing volume of vehicles that ply the route daily".He revealed that the problem on the road was being compounded by the drivers of articulated vehicles that usually parked their vehicles on the road sides.
