NPL shifts league restart due to post-election riots

Published by Guardian on Tue, 19 Apr 2011

THE Nigeria Premier League (NPL) has indefinitely postponed the restart of the second stanza of the league earlier billed for tomorrow due to the riots in some northern parts of the country.Quoting the NPL Acting Chairman, Shehu Gusau, yesterday, spokesman of the body, Emeka Nwani, said the lives of players and officials must be safeguarded. He stated: We dont have any choice but to postpone the restart of the second stanza. The report we are hearing is not good and we cannot jeopardise the lives of the players and officials. That is why we are postponing the commencement of the second round until we feel the time is right. There were reported cases of violence in Gombe and Adamawa in northern Nigeria over the expected victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in weekends presidential polls. The riot in Adamawa was said to have been fueled by speculations that Governor Murtala Nyako had influenced the outcome of the polls in the state, while that of Gombe was said to have been caused by reports that Jonathan was leading in polls results.Already, the Gombe state governor has imposed a curfew on the state to forestall further destruction of lives and property. Measures are said to be on the way to prevent the spread of riots across other parts of the country as members of the National Youth Service Corps, who are ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, have come under attacks by hoodlums who vented their anger on them.In a related development, the NPL has also postponed the contract signing ceremony between the clubs and the sports kit manufacturing firm, Masita, which should have come up today in Abuja. The ceremony will come up on a later date.
