How professionals can boost reading culture

Published by Guardian on Tue, 19 Apr 2011

THOUGH the event was meant for the presentation of two law books, Mergers & Acquisitions in Nigeria: Law & Practice and Fair Hearing, written by Fabian Ajogwu, SAN, it ended being an avenue on how professionals can boost the reading culture among Nigerians. From judges and lawyers, to boardroom gurus, academics and government officials at the books presentation, it was agreed that professionals are experts or specialists in the specific areas of their proficiency and therefore can increase the quantum of how Nigerians read to embrace best practices. However, those who spoke said such books must not be written for professional colleagues alone, but must be able to attract the interest of the general public, especially those who want to learn about specific issues affecting their lives. It was also emphasised that such books must be written in creative and simple language without unnecessary headaches of comprehension. The call for boosting the reading culture was kick-started by Nigerias former High Commissioner to United Kingdom, Dr. Christopher Kolade, who was the chairman at the event. Kolade, who said he had gone through the books, commended the writer for what has gone into the creative works. He said he like associating with professionals because they operate with best practices. Though he lamented that the nation has not been operating with best practices, the chairman of many blue-chip firms said such experts can correct the malaise by publishing creative, intelligent books on best practices to instill discipline among the citizenry. He said when he went through one of the books, he was surprised that despite his lack of legal training, he was able to understand the messages of the author. Also, the former Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Festus Odimegwu, who presented the books, said Nigerians must celebrate knowledge. He said people were committing impunities in the country, adding that it was better to support those working for spreading of knowledge, best practices and maintenance of law and order.   The company chief executive turned traditional ruler said Ajogwu belongs to the latter ranks. Those who spoke, including a Justice of Supreme Court, Bode Rhodes-Vivour, who represented the Chief Justice of the Federation, agreed with the two speakers. Others who attended the event include Justice Okechukwu Okeke, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, Olasupo Shasore; Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, Mr. Tunde Shofola, SAN, among others. In his reaction, Ajogwu, who is the Principal Partner of the law firm of Kenna and Partner and founder as well as fellow of Society for Corporate Governance, said he was moved to write the books to further the dream of those who create. He also said people should give fair hearing to every side to a case because even God gave fairing to Adam and Eve despite enough evidence he had against them.Mergers & Acquisitions in Nigeria: Law & Practice was review by the Director of Etisalats Corporate Social Responsibility Centre, Sir Chris Ogbechie while Managing Partner of SPA Ajibade & Co, Dr. Babatunde Ajibade, SAN dealt with Fair Hearing.
