NDDC promises to solve water problem in Ondo riverine area

Published by Tribune on Mon, 30 Apr 2012

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has expressed its readiness to solve the problem of water facing the people of the riverine area of Ondo state by making available potable water to the people. The Commissioner representing the state on the board of the commission, Dele Omogbemi, said apart from water, the intervention agency would go the extra mile to make living more meaningful for the people of the area.Omogbemi gave this assurance in Ogogoro community while inaugurating solar streetlights provided by the commission to the community.According to him, arrangements have been concluded by the NDDC to provide potable water for the people of the area by sinking a high powered boreholes for the use of the people of the Ogogoro and its environs. The commissioner also said since the community was surrounded by water, the commission was planning to embark on reclamation projects by sand filling some part of the area.He stated that the people and the commission had identified shortage of sand for the sand filling, thereby, might use mud to fill the areaApart from this, Omogbemi explained that the commission would construct concrete modern foot bridges to link various communities in the riverrine area of the state. He, therefore, said the commission would now be using pre cast foot bridges because of its durability as the concrete ones would last for a long period of time.He said "A lot of money is being spent in maintaining the wooden bridges which do not last and we are planning to replace these wooden bridges with concrete foot bridges."I want you all to see this as one of the few projects we have set aside for this community and others in this riverine area and I have included in the budget some money to take care of boreholes in order to provide drinkable water for our people"The representative of the community, Ebenezer Ogungbure, had lamented that despite being surrounded water, the community still travelled on sea to search for drinkable waterHe said the community would appreciate the commission's efforts in providing an alternative to the wooden bridges which he said would go a long way to ease peoples movement as the wooden bridges are getting old.He said the community which has about 10, 000 inhabitants, appreciated the good gestures from the commission and sought for the commission assistance in extending the street lights to some other areas in the community.
