First Deepwater eyes unbeaten season

Published by Guardian on Tue, 01 May 2012

AFTER finishing the second phase of the Zenith Bank Women Basketball League on Sunday without defeat, coach of First Deepwater Basketball Club, Lateef Erinfolami, says the priority for his team is to end the season without a loss. The Oil and Gas girls have won back-to-back titles but lost a game to First Bank Basketball team. However, Erinfolami told The Guardian that his desire was to see his team win the league this season without a loss. The former national team player said that his team would start preparing for the continental championship even with the last phase of the league, which comes up in Lagos. He said: 'I must commend my players for their industry, they have shown that they have what it takes to rule the local scene.'What we aspire now is to end the season without a loss, which means that we must win all our game in the final phase in Lagos. It has been a hectic season but we have shown that we have what it takes to become champions. We are going to prepare for the last phase the way we did for the first two phases.'According to Erinfolami, his team would prepare better for its next continental assignment and would do everything possible to do well in the FIBA African Club Championship for Women. He added: 'We will do well. All we have to do is prepare better than we did in the past.'First Deepwater Basketball Club, which stormed the Nigerian domestic scene four seasons ago after taking the place of defunct Dodan Amazon Basketball Club before the commencement of the 2008/2009 season, has succeeded in effecting significant changes in the Nigerian Women League, where it finished second behind the bankers in its first season.By so doing, it pushed the likes of Dolphins, Sunshine Angels and Delta Force basketball clubs to struggle for the third spot. Inspired by the Babatunde Babalola-led management team, First Deepwater went on to become the first club to stop First Bank's dominance of the local league when it wrestled the title from the coach Adewunmi Aderemi-tutored team in the 2009/2010 season.Since then, it has not looked back, thus relegating First Bank to the second position in the league. The club made appreciable impact in 2011 when it hosted and finished third in the FIBA Africa Champions Cup in Lagos.Babalola said the players and their handlers have done the organisation proud and justified the essence of giving back to the society through basketball.Redknapp targets new Spurs deal after England snubHARRY Redknapp says he is not expecting to become the next England manager after the Football Association (FA) entered talks with Roy Hodgson about succeeding Fabio Capello. The Tottenham boss was the initial overwhelming favourite to take over from the Italian after leading Spurs to a top-three spot, but form has tailed off at White Hart Lane since, possibly costing Redknapp a chance to lead the Three Lions.A 'shocked' Hodgson had also expected the Portsmouth former boss to get the national job, but has been revealed as the only candidate in discussions with the FA and Redknapp wished the Liverpool former manager luck if he takes the job and believes he will do a great job.
