Selewu residents angry with police over

Published by Tribune on Wed, 20 Apr 2011

Selewu community in the Igbogbo Bayeiku area of Ikorodu local Government Area of Lagos State, has expressed dismay with the way and manner that the police are handling of a case involving three suspected burglars who were handed over to them over a week ago.The suspects, who are non Nigerians, were said to have burgled various houses within the community using insiders knowledge, as one of them was said to be working as a labourer for a brick laying firm within the neighborhood.Residents told Community News that luck ran out on them after the gang re-attacked a house which they recently burgled and in the process, met a more vigilant landlord, who had a plan at hand in case the night marauders repeated their call. The wife of the landlord, who was said to have sent out a coded signal consequently received instantaneous assistance from other neighbours who assisted in over-powering one of the rogues, while the rest escaped into thin air.But persuaded that the members of the gang might not be too far from the scene of the robbery, the vigilance group was said to have pressurised the arrested one, who finally led them to his two accomplices, who were handed over to the police. When we arrested them and decided to invite the police, some of the people advised against it, saying the police would merely release them and the group may launch a reprisal attack, which could be deadly.Actually we bought the argument, but when we discovered that they were all indigenes of Cotonou, we felt there was the  need to avoid meting out jungle justice, so that nobody would accuse Nigerians of killing aliens in their midst. But you can see what has now happened: the police were said to have released them, and the guys had melted into thin air, explained a community member, while expressing the pains of the entire community. When Community News visited the Ikorodu police station, nobody was willing to speak officially on the issue, except an officer who said if they were brought to the station, then the case might have been transferred to the police special anti-robbery  unit  called SARS.May be if you go to SARS, you could get better result there he advised,   speaking on condition of anonymity, since he lacks the authority to speak to the press.Effort to speak with the Lagos State Police command image maker, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, also yielded no fruits.
