Rescue us from looming floods

Published by Tribune on Wed, 20 Apr 2011

Residents of Alagbole in Isheri Local Government Area of Ogun state, have sent a save-our-soul (SOS) message to concerned authorities regarding floods looming and threatening them in the light of the incoming rainy season.According to residents of the community, the floods is often compounded by the bad state of the roads in the area.Speaking on the development, a resident of the area, Mr Benjamin Falodun, said one of the causes of their problems during the rainy season, was the fact that houses were built very close to the roads leaving little space for the drainage and roads.Whenever you are travelling to Akute from Berger, the situation is terrible; I live on Peter Iseghoimeh street and our street and the surrounding ones are usually flooded in times of rain as a result of blockages from Ajunwa area. Most of the houses built here have no plans and there is nothing used as control for the flood. All available drainage for the flood are small and cannot contain the flood, which consequently runs into the roads and houses, Falodun said.Corroborating his statement, an elderly resident of the area, Mr Opiokoh, said they had suffered the dilemma over a long period of time and would love to see help come their way.A story was related by Falodun to the effect that about a year ago, a certain young graduate lost his life in the floods, which had resulted from the rains and bad drainage in the community. We are using this medium to appeal to the concerned authorities to find a lasting solution to the problem of flood, bad roads and drainage in the area so that our sufferings can come to an end, Falodun added.
