Noise pollution worry residents of Allied community

Published by Tribune on Wed, 20 Apr 2011

Residents of Allied Street in Agboyi Ketu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have called on the state government to caution churches in the area over noise pollution. The residents, who spoke with Community News, said more than six churches were located on the 200 metres street and that they made noise every night which often disturbed the people of the community especially when having their  vigils.According to Mr. Olu Ijaiye, one of the churches occupies the last floor of a two-storey building  in the area and holds vigil everyday since December. They all mount loudspeakers on the roof to make loud noise. We dont sleep in the night. We have written letters of petition to Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency to caution these churches, but nothing has been done, he said.In his comment, Mrs. Dorothy Anslem, aside from the churches on the street, there is a family church at the adjacent street that also made a lot of noise. They are not more than three in that church, but they make the loudest noise. People complain so much about them, but they have not changed. I think government should do something urgently, she said. However, a member of the Four Square Gospel Church on the street  who identified himself as Maxwell, told Community News that the church had since stopped using the loudspeakers during its vigil services. He said that though there were some churches that had not complied with government directive to stop making noise at night, the FSGC was not among them.Maxwell, who also condemned the noise making attitude of some churches in the area, stated that unless government served them abatement notice, the churches may not stop the anomaly.I think, we should try to understand that people living in the area have only the night to relax after a long day work, he said.
