Catholic cleric tasks politicians on humility

Published by Tribune on Wed, 20 Apr 2011

A Catholic cleric,Rev. Fr. Jude Abulu, has urged politicians seeking elective post to allow the spirit of humility demonstrated by Jesus Christ in this season of fasting, to always guide their activities.Abulu, while speaking during his homily at Saints Joachim and Annes Catholic Church, Ijegun, Lagos State, said humility in a leader was  necessary for progress.God teaches us in the gospel of Mathew 4:1-11, to demonstrate humility, though the devil may not like it, but doing so regularly would lead to path of progress,he saidHe added that a good leader was a person who humbles himself before his subordinates and such a person would be elevated by God and He would bless him with wisdom.According to him, the season of fasting (Lent) should impact positively on the lives of the people, especially by making them to shun negative tendencies and societal vices. We should harness the benefit of the fasting season to make people realise the importance of unity. People should also set aside self aggrandisement,he advisedHe further urged those in positions of leadership to put away selfish ambition which he said was a short cut to a fake success and untimely death. Abulu  also noted that in James 4:6, Christians were encouraged to stand against evil practices in the spirit of the Lent.Rise against evil practices, fight the good fight of faith against  all temptations of political violence especially as we draw close to the  last elections,he saidCatholic faithful across the world have been observing the forty days period of fasting and prayers expected to end very soon as part of the liturgical calendar which was a preparation towards Easter celebration.
