2015 elections: Voters to use permanent voter cards - INEC

Published by Tribune on Fri, 04 May 2012

All eligible voters will vote with their permanent voter cards in the 2015 general election. The chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Atahiru Jega, made this disclosure in response to the suggestion by the Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri, who was in his office on a collaborative visit.Mr Omeri had disclosed that NOA would soon hold an all-political-parties conference in collaboration with INEC to mobilise support against the alarming waves of political violence across the country. He added that the conference would inculcate positive value orientation in the political class and in the national politics. He condemned the recruitment of youths by politicians as political thugs rather than providing gainful employment and positive mentorship, noting that the NOA/INEC partnership would help to ensure that political parties would not adopt politicians with violent tendencies as their candidates. In addition, the NOA boss recommended adequate and timely deployment of personnel and election materials, creation of more polling units in clustered polling centres, sustenance of the current modified open ballot system and polling process, and also adequate and timely funding of all agencies involved in the electoral process for the conduct of future elections in the country. On its own part, he said the NOA was executing a three-year strategic voter education plan towards the success of the 2015 general election.Professor Atahiru Jega, who acknowledged what he described as the commendable contributions of NOA towards the success of the 2011 general election and other elections through its voter sensitisation before, during and after elections, pledged commitment towards sensitising both youths and politicians against negative involvements in politics.
