Okorie plans Southwest Cycling League

VICE President of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Ndubuisi Okorie, has promised to institute a league for riders in the South West zone of the country.Speaking during the ongoing three-day refresher course organised by Cycling Commissaires Association of Nigeria at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, Okorie told participants that he was moved by the dearth of competitions in the zone to institute the league, adding that other plans were on to resuscitate the sport across the country.The Ibadan-based civil engineer said: 'As a member of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria representing this zone (South/west), I have called for the introduction of cycling league competition among the states in the South West zone, where each state will be engaged every week in a league-format competition and the winner emerging at the end of the league.'I have asked the officials to come up with a proposal in that regard so that I can cultivate sponsors to help in the area of finance and other logistics. I belief if we start that from here, other zones would follow suit and our athletes would be adequately engaged all the year round.'Okorie thanked the leadership of the Cycling Commissaires Association of Nigeria for putting together the three-day seminar targeted at improving the technical capacity of officials. According to him, the issue of training of commissaires is of paramount importance to the federation.He added:'As you know, officiating in any sporting event is of paramount importance to success of such event. Most times there are disagreements based on technicality or human error, as we always see in football.'It is not different in cycling because most times human error has caused disagreements in cycling competitions. That is why I am personally delighted to see this event being held in my territory.
