Irish Women Tweet About Their Periods To Protest Abortion Law

Published by Huffington Post on Fri, 06 Nov 2015

Irish women are tweeting details of their menstrual cycles to Prime Minister Enda Kenny to call for a repeal to the country's restrictive abortion laws.Abortion is socially divisive in Ireland where, amid large street protests from both sides of the fraught debate, a complete ban was only lifted in 2013 when terminations were allowed if a mother's life was in danger.@EndaKennyTD When I have my period I like to eat chocolate and cry over my lack of bodily autonomy #repealthe8th R2theB (@beccafly) November 4, 2015 After Ireland became the first country to adopt gay marriage via a popular vote this year, marking a major shift in what was once a strongly Catholic and socially conservative society, calls for abortion law reform have gained momentum.Hey @EndaKennyTD just so you know, I got my period two days ago. Pretty heavy flow at first but now just occasional spotting #repealthe8th Grinne Maguire (@GrainneMaguire) November 2, 2015 Kenny, a practicing Catholic, was sent plastic fetuses and letters written in blood by pro-life campaigners for bringing in the limited reforms two years ago and has said any further changes will be left to the next government. His junior coalition partner, Labour, has already said it will campaign at the elections next year to allow abortion for cases such as rape, incest and fatal fetal abnormality.Activists are seeking the abolition of the eighth amendment of the constitution, which enshrines the equal right to life of the mother and her unborn child, while their opponents demand that it remains in place to safeguard all life.More tweets below:@endakennytd I'm definitely PMS-ing so I'm not pregnant - phew! #dodgedabullet #repealthe8th Ailish Farragher (@Heidiboots) November 3, 2015 @EndaKennyTD 1st period since my stillborn baby. But I could tweet you some old smear test results, if you'd like' #repealthe8th Tara Flynn (@TaraFlynn) November 4, 2015 Hey buddy @EndaKennyTD My period feels like a bull in china shop, but instead of a shop it's my uterus. #repealthe8th @GrainneMaguire Katie Poushpom (@KatiePoushpom) November 3, 2015 -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
