Eagles must win Ethiopia match for Adefemi, says Kanu

Published by Guardian on Wed, 20 Apr 2011

A DEJECTED former skipper of the Super Eagles, Kanu Nwankwo, has regretted the demise of team defender Olubayo Adefemi, describing his death as a big loss to the country, while urging the team to win the Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia next month to honour the fallen hero.Kanu told journalists in Lagos yesterday that having played alongside the player during the build-up to the 2010 South Africa World Cup, he discovered that Adefemi was a humble and talented player, who has a future with the senior national team.I met with him after the Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia and he was a very promising player and when I heard his of death yesterday (Monday) it was a big shock to me and a very sad news for us as a team, Kanu said. We hope to use the match against Ethiopia to honour Olubayo by winning away in Addis Ababa.Meanwhile, Kanu believes that the June 1 friendly match between Nigeria and Argentina would be a big test for the Samson Siasia-led team. The Portsmouth of England star told journalists yesterday that since the new technical crew had started rebuilding a new national team, the June I Guinness The Match clash would provide the team with a good avenue to assess itself against a strong opposition like Argentina. He said: I think the match against Argentina is very important to the Super Eagles and there is no doubt that it is going to be a big test for the team, especially playing against a star-studded south American side. Argentina is a big team in world football and it is a big country blessed with talents, just like Nigeria.I believe we are going all out in the match to be able to settle scores with Argentina and I hope the team will not let the country down.Guinness Nigeria Plc is bankrolling the epic encounter scheduled to hold at the Abuja National Stadium.
