APGA guber candidate, Orji differ on alleged buying of votes

Published by Guardian on Wed, 20 Apr 2011

THE All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State, Reagan Ufomba, has accused Governor Theodore Orji of spending above the amount required for gubernatorial campaigns. But reacting to Ufombas allegations, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Orji on Legal Matters, James Okpara, described the APGA candidates claim as the antics of a drowning man looking for excuses for his impending failure at the polls.According to Ufomba, the electoral act stipulates that no candidate in the governorship election is allowed to spend more than N200 million in his campaign, but I have evidence to prove that Governor Theodore Orji has spent more than N5 billion so far in buying voters support.Ufomba, who spoke with The Guardian at his Umuogele, Ntigha country-home, also alleged that the Abia State governor has connived with INEC and the security agents to manipulate elections in the state.Ufomba also called for the nullification of the National Assembly polls, saying the result announced by INEC did not reflect the wishes of Abia voters.Okpara, who said PDP knew the electoral guidelines and would not do anything that would violate it, added: the PDP has pursued an issue-based campaign. The allegation by Reagan Ufomba is false, unsubstantiated and meant to distract us from delivering from our campaigns. But he has failed. He is actually looking for excuses to explain APGAs poor showing in Abia State.Abians know that Reagan Ufomba has nothing to offer the state hence the massive support for Theodore Orji. PDP under Theodore Orji believes in a free and fair election in which the will of the majority counts.
