Sylva Willing To Face 'Properly Constituted' Court

Published by Guardian on Sun, 06 May 2012

Denies Authorship Of LetterFORMER Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, has denied authorship of a letter, widely circulated online, and alleged to have been written by him.He also says he is 'willing and ready to appear in a properly constituted court of law to answer any charges in connection with his tour of duty as Governor of Bayelsa State'.The purported letter reads in part: 'As I write you this letter, Mr. President, Sir, I feel a spell of grief in me, not because I have lost the office of Governor, but because of the totally unjust way, manner, reason and people used to remove me from office and the wave of state persecution still lynching on me.'Most painful is that it is you, the President that is at the centre of it all. I believe I have not done anything wrong personally to you to deserve this.''Consequently, I demand from you, Mr. President, a public statement that I have no treason allegation against me as put out during the desperate days to deny me the governorship contest; that the claim was untruly made in the heat of the moment, and an assurance that such a trumped-up charge shall not be levelled against me.'However, the rebuttal, which was contained in a release by media aide, Doifie Ola, reads: 'The attention of H.E. Chief Timipre Sylva has been drawn to a letter purportedly written by him titled: 'I Need A Public Assurance From The President,' published widely online on Friday, May 4, 2012.'Sylva understands that the said letter may have come from his friends or political associates. He wishes to state that while he substantially shares the sentiments expressed therein, he did not author the said letter. Nor did he authorise the use of his name on it.'Sylva, thus, clarifies that he is willing and ready to appear in a properly constituted court of law to answer any charges in connection with his tour of duty as Governor of Bayelsa State.'As a democrat and firm believer in the rule of law, Sylva reaffirms his unalloyed belief and respect for the democratic institutions of the country, particularly, the judiciary, despite the attempts to manipulate the gears and levers of that crucial third arm of government.
