Rugby board ends southern trials for Confederation Cup team

A COMBINATION of speed, attitude, skill, fitness, tactics and understanding of the game saw the selection, over the weekend, of the 25 players to form the southern rugby squad during the first of two trials to pick a squad that will represent Nigeria at the Confederation of African Rugby tournament, also known as the African Cup.The trials held at the Police Collage, Ikeja, ahead of the Confederation Cup holding this July in Botswana, saw players from the southern rugby clubs comprising Racing RFC, Police RFC, Lagos Rugby Club, Ilorin RFC as well as Warri RFC, among others, vying for positions in the team.Over 35 players representing the different clubs were split into two teams playing against each other in a full 15 aside game in spite of the heavy down pour. It was indeed the survival of the fittest, where each player made a good showing of skill and speed to ensure selection. The selection of the 25-man squad for the northern representatives also took place in Kaduna same day.According to the national co-ordinator of the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation, Martin Crawford, selection of the final 25-man squad to represent Nigeria at the Confederation Cup will be on May 12 during the match between the northern and southern rugby squads at the National Institute for Sports, National Stadium, Surulere.
