Much ado about lace

Published by Guardian on Mon, 07 May 2012

LACE has always been a fabric of choice for celebrities and royals. A year go, the choice of lace that would adorn the wedding gown of the former Kate Middleton was the top most question on the minds of all fashionistas around the world.Prior to her wedding, the dress drew a lot of media attention simply because of the world's interest in this real life fairy tale. "What style will she wear' Will she wear a British or foreign designer'Will the dress be like the late Princess Diana's' Were some of the questions people asked."Expect to be disappointed" is what I told my friend as she and I discussed the Duchesses' possible last year in my Manhattan apartment and eating cake and drinking tea in proper English fashion to celebrate the royal wedding and my birthday, which happens to be on April 29, as well.I made that statement because when expectations are high, disappointment is eminent. The Duchess of Cambridge stayed true to her personality by keeping her dress simple and elegant as she had shown the world as the Prince's girlfriend. Stepping out of herself would have been projected as obnoxious and "I have arrived, look at me, I'm a star."The dress was made of luxurious laces including the French Chantilly lace in combination with English hand cut lace in a Carrickmacross cut-out technique from Ireland made by Sarah Burton, the Creative Director from the house of Alexander McQueen.Recently, I attended my cousins's wedding in Lagos where lace, which is the official ceremonial fabric of choice was in high display by both genders unlike in the West where lace is strictly feminine and for ball gowns and wedding dresses. The Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress triggered a revival of the use of lace in high-society fashion circles in the West.In comparison with Nigeria, where sophistication and/or social position is determined by the choice and cost of lace as lace is one across all social classes informally as daily dress and formally as ceremonial outfits. The lace women wear in Nigeria come from Switzerland, Austria and now China. In the West, lace still draws from its legendary association with mystique, sensuality, sophistication and romance. For the Nigerian, it has become a material of utility.nonnyslist.tumblr.com, elle.blanche1@gmail.com
