Boko Haram menace'll not break Nigeria -Gov Aliyu

Published by Tribune on Tue, 08 May 2012

NIGER State governor, Dr Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu, on Monday, said the current activities of the dreaded Islamic sect, otherwise known as Boko Haram, will not break the country, saying that the nation would soon overcome it.The governor, who said this in Abuja, during a curtesy call on the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, said the Boko Haram menace was not up to the civil war the nation went through. He said the menace came unexpectedly but the governments at all levels were working round the clock to tackle it, adding that what was needed was the cooperation of all and sundry.Governor Aliyu, however, dismissed the claims in some quarters that the sect was wrecking havoc on innocent people because the North lost out power to the South. He stressed the need for the state governors to embark on developmental programmes that would have direct impact on the people at the grass roots and to create employment for the youth, which would keep them off the streets.According to him, 'we must fight poverty; we must injustice. We the governors must move closer to our people, we must be concerned about their welfare.'Boko Haram is something we didn't prepare for; if somebody predicted it five or 10 years ago, we will not believe it, but with efforts being put in place by government at all levels, we will soon overcome the security challenges we are facing as a nation.'Reponding, Alhaji Tukur commended the developmental projects being executed in the state by the governor, saying that the party was proud of his style of administration.Alhaji Tukur disclosed that the PDP government at all levels would continue to provide good governace to the people as promised during the electioneering campaing and bring dividends of democracy right to their door steps.
