Greensprings partners Kanu on talent hunt, camp holds July

Published by Guardian on Tue, 08 May 2012

WITH the official launching of the first annual Greensprings Kanu Football Camp, Nigeria seems certain to reap a harvest of talents in the mould of former captain of the Super Eagles, Nwankwo Kanu. These were the words of the Director of Greensprings School, Lai Koiki, who described the Portsmouth of England striker as a blessing to Nigeria and Africa as whole, saying: 'We believe the involvement of Kanu in the camp will help to unearth talents that will make the country proud like the former African Footballer of the Year.'Koiki believes the launch of the camp would boost the development of the Nigerian youth. For Kanu, his partnership with the school was borne out of his desire to help Nigerian youths. He described the initiative as laudable efforts that he would support.'The project is a Greensprings School project and initiated by the school. This became possible because my Heart Foundation has a very good relationship with the school over the years, and we share the same vision in child value and care,' he said.'As an ambassador of Nigeria Football Federation, I feel I should be able to promote a development project that will help to grow our football at grassroots level in schools, communities and at club levels. I also believe that if we take such development programmes into schools, it will help us build a football culture, which has been evidently lacking in our football.'He added: 'The programme will also draw the attention of football academies all over the world and especially in African countries. In this regard, Greensprings School will not only be seen as a pacesetter but also fulfilling its objective in the development of a child academically, physically and emotional, by combining academic with sports.'For the President of West Africa School Sports Union (WASSU), Adeleke Olaiya, the mission, vision and strategies of Greensprings in sports tally with the ideals of WASSU: 'We are happy to be technical partners with the school in this international project and in other activities and commitments of the school to sports and games,' he said.
