Dont destroy your cards, Buhari tells voters

Published by Tribune on Thu, 21 Apr 2011

Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, called for patience among aggrieved voters following the reportthat some of them were destroying their voter cards. The standard-bearer of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in last Saturdays presidential poll had, on Tuesday, disowned those behind the spate of violence in parts of the North in the wake of the outcome of the presidential poll.In what he tagged a message of peace and hope to Nigerians, he urged to keep hope by making their cards intact and using it to exercise their civic right in the Tuesdays governorship and state House of Assembly elections. He thanked the people for the courage and perseverance they exhibited in enduring the long, tedious and tiring process of registration, accreditation, voting, protecting the vote and ensuring that it counted. He said he and other leaders had commenced consultations at the highest levels to recover what he described as their stolen mandate. He said: I would, therefore, urge you to continue to be patient. As I pointed out in my earlier address to you, it is wrong for you to allow miscreants to infiltrate your ranks and perpetrate such dastardly acts as the mindless destruction of worship places. Needless to say, this act is worse than the rigging of the elections. The former leader stated that information at his disposal indicated that out of frustration, some persons were destroying their voter cards; an act he said was a mistake, because it could not solve the problem at hand.
