Teams begin hostilities at Lagos table tennis league

Published by Guardian on Thu, 10 May 2012

THE Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex at Rowe Park will come alive today as the Lagos State Table Tennis League serves off.The weekly tourney, sponsored by the Oniru Royal Family, will have clubs compete for honours at the eight-week championship. According to the Technical Director of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association (LSTTA), John Peters, 12 teams have confirmed their participation in the championship.'We believe that this event will afford us the opportunity to engage our athletes, especially those that will represent the state at the National Sports Festival in November, because playing with some of the experienced players will help them improve their game,' Peters said.'Teams will garner points every week while the top ones will qualify for the grand finale during the final week. For now, we will be playing the matches every Thursday but because of the ongoing Lagos State Sports Festival, we will suspend it until after the games. But we will commence this Thursday (today).Peters, who is the longest serving Nigerian international referee, said that every week, the winners would receive N25,000 for their efforts while runners-up and joint third teams will get N15,000 and N10,000 respectively.Among the clubs expected at the eight-week league are Union Bank Sports Club, Spring Fresh, Olufab, Nigeria Police, Femi Sokoya, Yet-Kad, J30 and Surmer, while institutions like the University of Lagos and Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education will also present teams.
