Bayelsa United hopes settled debts will uplift players

OFFICIALS of Bayelsa United say the team is now ready to challenge for promotion to the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), as the players have received part of their sign-on fees.The clubs management early this week settled part of the players sign-on fees for the ongoing soccer season. According to a press statement signed by its media officer, George Ameli, the club has paid 15 per cent of the sign-on fees owed the players and their coaches.Ameli said the gesture was one of the steps being taken by the Rumson Baribote-led management of Bayelsa United to ensure the club returned to the elite class at the end of this season. According to Ameli, the payment would motivate the players to go all out to win all their remaining games when the second stanza of the league kicks off next week.He commended the players for putting up a five-star performance in the last three months, a situation that saw the club move from the bottom of the league table to the top bracket. He said: The club management is happy with the performance of the players.Early this year, Bayelsa was on the bottom of the league table and the situation was like a hopeless one. But the players rose to the occasion and decided to turn things around even when the needed fund was not there. We are happy with their level of co-operation and that of the Bayelsa State Sports Commissioner, Opukiri Ere Jones.
