A loss to Argentina will dampen Eagles spirits, Brodrick-Imasuen warns Siasia

Published by Guardian on Thu, 21 Apr 2011

EVEN as he is against the June 1 friendly match with Argentina at the Abuja International Stadium, 1985 World Cup winning coach, Sebastian Brodrick-Imasuen, has cautioned Super Eagles handler, Samson Siasia, to avoid defeat when both sides meet.Brodrick-Imasuen told The Guardian from Benin yesterday that it was too early for the new team to face a highly-rated team like Argentina, stating that for now, the Eagles needed to build confidence with some of the matches it has played so far.As far as I am concerned and, to be honest based on my experience, playing Argentina when we are still rebuilding a team might be counter-productive because a rebuilding team needs time and patience to succeed, he explained. There is no doubt that we had played the South American team in the past and they had won most of the matches. But playing them now might not help us because for Clemens Westerhof to succeed, it took him time. So we should not just rush to play a top team at this point in time. However, he lauded the organisers of the match, Guinness Nigeria Plc, for bankrolling the epic match, saying: I really want to commend the organisers of the match, but for the Eagles to lose the match on June I might affect the teams spirit in subsequent matches.Meanwhile, to Super Eagles former skipper, Kanu Nwankwo, the encounter against Argentina would be a big test for the new technical crew. The Arsenal of England erstwhile striker said the clash would help the team assess itself against a strong opposition. He said: As long as I respect Argentina, I believe the Eagles will go all out to win the match in Abuja.Nevertheless, Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, believes that the match would help the team assess its strength: I thank Guinness for stepping in and making this happen for Nigeria. Its now down to us and the fans to make sure we show that we are a football nation worthy of respect and have the potential to succeed on footballs world stage, he said.We have played Argentina three times at senior national level in the pastthey have been a formidable opponent.  They too are building for their future and from this game we can benchmark our future heroes against their future heroes. But we are ready for the challenge and relish it.
