Oshiomhole re-opens AAU, OAU resumes April 27

AFTER two months of closure due to students unrest sparked off by an increase in fees, the Edo state government had directed the management of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma to re-open the school with immediate effect.A statement by the Special Adviser, Media to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Tony Iyare said the governors promise during his visit and subsequent meeting with the students union leadership led to the decision. The state government has also directed the management of AAU to reduce the fees for part-time students by N5000 each.Iyare said government would increase the monthly subvention to the university to compensate for the reduction in fees.  The state government further directed the Council and Vice Chancellor to engage the students constructively and transparently on the true financial position of the university, and determine the appropriate fees for the full-time students.   Government reinstates her commitment to sustain the current increase in the monthly subvention to AAU from an average of N135 million to N210 million monthly, plus additional funds arising from the reduction in part-time students fees, Iyare affirmed.  Also, students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State have been asked to resume for the continuation of the 2010/2011 harmattan semester on Wednesday April 27.However, students union activities have been suspended until further notice. Authorities of the university closed it down on February 23,2011 following a violent protest over the acceptance fee of N20.000 introduced by the university.A statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the University, Mr  Abiodun Olarewaju, said the universitys Senate met on March 30, reviewed the  circumstances surrounding the  closure and the report of its committee, and resolved to re-open the institution.  Lectures would begin in earnest on April 28, while the matriculation ceremony earlier  scheduled for February 23 would now hold on May 5. The school management urged parents and guardians to however prevail on their children to be of good behaviour and orderly conduct to enhance a smooth running of the university.
