Librarians brainstorm on ways of improving reading culture

RECTOR of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Mrs. Margaret Ladipo has tasked the Committee of Monotechnic and Polytechnic Librarians in Nigeria (COMPLIN) on the need for an improvement in the services being provided by libraries in Nigerian tertiary institutions.Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 41st Regular Meeting of COMPLIN, held at YABATECH recently, Lapido noted: the library remains the custodian of academic values and information, through which diverse educational resources are preserved and readily made available to end users, for enhancement and acquisition of further knowledge to the development of the globe and advancement of humanity.She appealed to the librarians to make good use of their deliberation to advance the cause of their professional duties as custodians of books and gateway to knowledge acquisition through ICT world.Represented by the Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. Harieth Akubuiro, Ladipo further challenged the librarians to come up with innovative and pragmatic methods of improving the reading culture of an average Nigerian.In her welcome address, YABATECHs Librarian, Mrs. Tayewo Adebowale, said the pivotal role of the library as the hub of all academic and research activities cannot be over-emphasised.The chairman of COMPLIN, Mr. U.O. Ugwuogu in his keynote address, explained that the bi-annual meeting was being held to rub minds among the professionals on crucial issues and policies that will promote the development of libraries in the monotechnics and polytechnic.
