Company donates borehole to Ubeji community

Published by Tribune on Fri, 22 Apr 2011

The Nigerian Gas Company has built and donated a  borehole to Ubeji community in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta to help in solving  its water needs.Inaugurating the project  in Ubeji during the week, the Managing Director of the company, Mr Saidu Mohammed, said that the project was integrated with a stand-by generator to ensure constant water supply.Mohammed explained that the role of the company was to transmit and market natural gas and its derivatives in the Nigerian market and West Africa. He said the company had a vision to grow and develop and as such, has its networks of gas pipelines extended to over 1,300km with metering stations spread in eight states of the federation.Mohammed  named the states as Delta, Edo, Rivers, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Ogun, Kogi and Lagos. He said that the spread meant that the company had many challenges in the provision of basic amenities to over 170 communities across the country where its facilities existed. The manager said that ``as a responsible and responsive company, we remain committed to developing a robust and sustainable relationship with our host communities.Their wellbeing is paramount to our corporate social responsibility thrust.Mohammed said the company would always encourage and appreciate communities that promoted peace, dialogue and understanding in the resolution of issues, adding:This, indeed, is the hallmark of our community relations engagement process.Mohammed said that the company would prefer direct contact with its management through its public affairs department on any issue and not through a third party, considering that problems were ``better solved through  constant communication between entities with vested interests for the mutual benefit of all.He advised the people to safeguard the project jealously.Responding, the Secretary, Ubeji Elders Council,  George Amatesiro, thanked the company for the gesture and called for the employment of the community graduates.Amatesiro said that in the past, the reason oil companies gave for not employing  youths from the area was that they were not graduates but that at present, the communities had produced a large number of graduates.
