Nigerian parents in UK tasked on successful parenting

Published by Tribune on Fri, 22 Apr 2011

NIGERIAN parents living in  United Kingdom have been urged to inculcate positive values and morale in their children. The Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the call was made by speakers at a two-day seminar entitled: Refocusing Nigerian Youths Leadership Summit-A call to Action,  in London.Dr Rose Nwanna, Director of Refocus Youth Charity (RYC), who spoke on the problems faced by Nigerian youths living in the UK, said values taught to children would  structure the basis for their attitudes towards life and the society. She said that mothers, who  are  particularly endowed with `unlimited strength, were major contributors to the upbringing of children. They have control on their families, thus they bear the responsibility of ensuring that the offspring is steered in the right direction, Nwanna said. She said, since children were  inquisitive at a certain stage in their development,  parents must endeavour to be patient,  listening and ready to answer their questions.Shutting curious children up, especially teenagers, may lead to trouble; they may turn to peers, television or the internet for answers, she added. In  her presentation,  Mrs Yemisi Sanusi,  who is a nurse, gave tips on successful parenting and urged parents to always get  involved in the affairs of their children. She advised parents to monitor their childrens performances at school, their moods and psychological frame of mind to avoid any health disorder.Earlier, Mr Bimbo Folayan, Chair Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (CANUK),  said  parenthood was ordained by God hence, parents should not shy away  from such responsibility. He charged parents to shun negative vices and be  good role models for their children.
