Tenant docked for issuing dud cheque to landlord

One Mohammed Abdullahi (50), of Wuse Zone Four in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was recently arraigned before an Abuja Magistrates Court for giving a dud cheque to his landlord.The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Abu Okpanachi, told the court that the case was reported to the Area Commander, Metro, Maitama, on April 13, by Joe Ikenwe of Abuja Shopping Mall.Okpanachi said that the accused was a tenant, occupying the complainants property at No. 34, Kitwe Street, Zone 4, Wuse and that his tenancy had expired since July 31, 2010.He said that the complainants effort to collect his rent from the accused was to no avail.The prosecutor said that the accused, issued a cheque of N1 million but when the landlord presented it at the bank it was returned unpaid, due to  lack of fund.He said the accused was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating punishable under Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code Law.However, when the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty while Magistrate Khadijat Mustapha granted him bail in the sum of N80,000 with two sureties in like sum.Mustapha ordered that one of the sureties must not be less than Grade Level 10 officer and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.The case was adjourned to May 18 for hearing.
