New Volkswagen Beetle arrives in style

Published by Guardian on Fri, 22 Apr 2011

VOLKSWAGEN family has unveiled brand new Beetle at the Shanghai motor show. It replaces a car unveiled back in 1998, making its lifecycle around twice the industry standard for a modern car.1998s Beetle is still a whippersnapper compared to the original model, which, according to Yahoo cars was produced for an incredible 65 years, between 1938 and 2003. It began life as The Peoples Car, envisioned by Adolf Hitler.Volkswagen has played it safe with the new version, as the styling is hardly a radical departure from that of its predecessor.Still, its longer and wider, which makes it more spacious and practical - the boot capacity has increased by half, going from 209 litres to 310.A lower roofline and a wider track promise better handling, while the interior quality seems to have taken a big step up, too.Three trim levels - Beetle, Design and Sport - will be available and Volkswagen has added a full range of optional extras, many of which werent available until now - including satellite navigation, keyless entry and bi-xenon headlamps.Four engines will be offered, underpinned by a single 104 basic horsepower (bhp) 1.6-litre diesel capable of 65.7mpg and putting out just 112g/km of CO2. Of the three petrol engines, the 197bhp 2.0-litre TSI unit - lifted straight from the Golf GTI - will generate the most excitement.
