THE Urhobo Historical Society (UHS) has applauded Nigerians for voting for the unity of the country in the presidential election of last Saturday instead of divisive and destructive tendencies. Also, pharmacists on Tuesday congratulated Dr. Goodluck Jonathan on his victory at the last Saturdays presidential election. The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) said his emergence as the fourth President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, would give a rare opportunity to re-define values and character of the country. The congratulatory letter signed by the PSN President, Azubuike Okwor, on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), the Council and the entire membership of the PSN, stated: We congratulate you on your victory at the 2011 presidential polls and your emergence as the fourth President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In a signed statement in Lagos on Thursday on behalf of the society worldwide by the Co-ordinator of UHS, Johnson Barovbe, he said by voting convincingly for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerians had said with one voice that they were ready to forge ahead to build an egalitarian country where justice reigns. It has never been so good that 32 out of 36 states and the FCT voted in a president in an atmosphere of free, fair and credible elections. Nigerians saw a unifying factor in President Goodluck Jonathan and went in for him. They did not mind their individual parties, ideologies, Nigerians did not consider ethnicity, religion or ancestry in their voting last Saturday, Barovbe said. According to the UHS, the millions of Nigerians who voted for the man, President Goodluck Jonathan and not his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cannot be wrong on who will best serve them. The society appealed to the few who feel aggrieved that their candidates did not win and, therefore, must destroy the nation to satisfy their masters to stop because no country in the world had had 100 per cent free and fair elections. Not even the greatest democracy in the world, the United States of America, has attained such a feat reserved only for God Almighty. All international and local observers including President Barack Obama have hailed the two last elections held this April as free and fair within human abilities, the UHS statement said. It added that the INEC and its chair, Prof. Attahiru Jega, should be commended for managing to pull a surprise after a woeful outing in the governorship re-run of January 6, 2011, in Delta State. The UHS advised President Jonathan to remember his campaign promises to all Nigerians as both his supporters and opponents would be watching his performance. It does not take long for Nigerians who sang his praises today to condemn him tomorrow if he did not hit the road running. After all, he does not need to wait till his swearing-in on May 29, 2011, before he should put his hands on the plough.President Jonathans sterling performance in office will open the way for all other minorities to aspire to the highest office after him. And we pray for our brother to succeed, Barovbe said. The society commiserated with families who lost their loved ones especially, youth corps members who were on national assignment, in the senseless orgy of violence in some states of the North after the Saturdays presidential election, to take heart and be rest assured that as President Jonathan had promised, they would not be forgotten. UHS also appealed to Delta State indigenes to come out en masse again on April 26 for the governorship and state House of Assembly polls to vote in those that will serve them faithfully and not those who serve themselves and leave the masses to wallow in abject poverty.
