Benue varsity's medical students protest over non-accreditation of programme

PANDEMONIUM broke out at the Benue State University's College of Medicine recently, as medical students attempted to barricade the main entrance to the Government House, Makurdi, to protest the state government's delay in putting the necessary equipments required accreditation of the college in place.The medical students had embarked on similar protest in February this year, when they accused the state government of insensitivity to their plight for the past nine years.They expressed grief that five of their batches had remained stagnant at 400 level, as a result of non-completion of the teaching hospital, a prerequisite for the accreditation of the clinical stage of their programme.Led by their leader, Comrade Innocent Abba, the students insisted on meeting with Governor Gabriel Suswam to iron out critical issues. They were, however, intercepted by security men.Speaking to journalists, the students stated that the March deadline the government gave them to complete works on the teaching hospital for the accreditation was not accomplished, lamenting that their fate now hangs in the balance.All entreaties by government officials likethe Secretary to the State Government, Dr. David Salifu and Commissioner for Education, Dr. Elizabeth Ugor to them to exercise patience as government was doing everything to ensure the completion of the teaching hospital fall on deaf ears, until the arrival of their Provost, Dr. Shima Gyoh.Chatting with journalists on the matter, the SSG, explained that the state government placed the medical school as one of its priorities, adding that the furniture has been supplied while assuring that the remaining furniture will be supplied by June, adding that the classrooms, X-ray department and OPDare all ready.Salifu appealed to the students to scrutinise information reaching them and assured that the invitation to the accreditation team will soon be done by the school management, stressing that everything is being done to ensure the success of the visit of the team.
