Senator to immortalize 1929 Aba riot women

THE Chairman, Senate Committee on Women and Youth Development, Helen Esuene, has concluded plans to build a hall in Ikot Abasi council area as a memorial for the women who died during the 1929 women riots against taxation.According to her, this would help to correct the erroneous impression in history books that the protest was in Aba, in the present Abia State.Coming 83 years after the massacre, the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South senatorial district in the Senate said that the project would serve as a remembrance of women's struggle for freedom from their colonial masters.Besides, she said that such a monument would help the state's quest of becoming a destination for tourists, noting that it would also generate revenue for the state.The Senator, who was addressing stakeholders from her senatorial district said that apart from building the memorial hall, she intended building classroom blocks with a solar-powered borehole and streetlights as part of her constituency projects in Urue Offong Oruko and Udung Uko local council areas.
