God's Mercy On His People

Published by Guardian on Sun, 20 May 2012

GOD is gracious, merciful, loving and kind. He does not get angry easily. All these attributes of the Almighty God are seen on display throughout the Bible.'The Lord is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and wrath. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and furiously destroys his enemies! The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet. At his command the oceans and rivers dry up, the lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade and the green forests of Lebanon wilt. In his presence the mountains quake, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles, and its people are destroyed. Who can stand before his fierce anger' Who can survive his burning fury' His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.'-Nahum. 1:2-6There are examples of people and nations that experienced God's wrath while some enjoyed his mercy. The people who were destroyed took for granted God's slowness to anger. Despite all the warnings and time of repentance given, they took things for granted till they were destroyed. This is a lesson for us all, to take God's words seriously whenever he sends them to us as individuals, families or nations. The Bible says, 'He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.' This simply means that God delivers and heals by His word. It is left to the people to obey and be delivered or do otherwise and be destroyed. For example, in Jonah 1:1, 2, God told Jonah to preach to Nineveh, the most important city in Assyria, the rising world power of Jonah's day. One is able to get details of various forms wickedness perpetrated in Nineveh from Prophet Nahum. Nineveh was guilty of evil plots against God (Nahum 1:9); exploitation of the helpless (Nahum 2:12); cruelty in war (Nahum 2:12-13); and idolatry, prostitution, and witchcraft (Nahum 3:4).God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, about 500 miles northeast of Israel, to warn of judgment and declare that the people could receive mercy and forgiveness, if they repented. 'The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: 'Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh! Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.'Like Prophets Jonah and Nahum, I am equally warning individuals, leaders and Nigerians to turn from their wicked ways in order for God to forgive us and heal our land. God is neither happy nor interested in destroying the works of his hand. However, when anybody decides to disobey God's voice perpetually and fails to repent, then he or she may experience the wrath of God.God bless.skabiaraofciem@yahoo.co.uk
